The American Folk Art Museum curates and displays contemporary American folk art as well as the work of self taught artists from the 1800s till present. Housing over 8000 works of artists who have had no formal training in their fields, the collections to be found here are some of the most eclectic out of any of the country’s art museums.
A variety of different media of art are on display from paint on canvas and paper to sculptures, curios and even a preserved fish from the last century. The museum focuses on emphasising the importance of art produced by instinct rather than formal training and the curators have travelled far and wide to collect works from across the country and also the world to showcase the incredible range of styles and mediums that were in use. As an added bonus, this museum is free to visit and is said to have one of the best museum gift shops in the city, making it a must see spot for anyone visiting Manhattan.
