The Museum of Arts and Design, fondly referred to as MAD, is located in Manhattan in New York City and explores the creative process of craftsmanship and design in contemporary America. Ever since its opening in 1956, the museum has featured exhibitions and educational programmes that look at the connection between art, craftsmanship and the process of turning materials into works that enhance contemporary life. Apart from serving as a platform for new artists to share their work, it also served as an important link between art and industry.
The museum, in addition to its regular exhibits, now houses a centre for the study of jewellery as well as studios for resident artists so that visitors get to interact first hand with the design and creation processes of artists and craftspeople. The techniques and technologies used range from ancient, like jewellery and stained glass, to cutting edge modern processes like 3D printing and industrial design. The museum building itself pays tribute to unorthodox workmanship and craft and is easy to find due to its distinctive terra cotta tile and glass exterior. Initially considered controversial by many leading architects due to its unconventional appearance, it is now a Manhattan landmark.
