Prospect Park Zoo, New York City Overview

In Brooklyn, on the eastern side of Prospect Park lies Prospect Park Zoo. Formerly a menagerie since the 1800s, the zoo has been officially open as a public zoo since 1935 and still retains some of its vintage architecture and sculptures.

Due to its relatively smaller exhibits and open layout, and because it adjoins Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, this zoo is popular amongst local families, especially those with kids, looking for a fun relaxing day. The Brooklyn botanical garden is right across the street and there are multiple pocket-friendly eating options scattered around as well.

For true enthusiasts, there are educational programs (for school-age children) held in the zoo’s Discovery Center as well as volunteer programs for adults.
