The Staten Island Zoo in New York City is the only zoo in the city not run by the Wildlife Conservation Society. Local legend says that the zoo initially had ties with the Staten Island Reptile Club which would explain why it has always had a particularly impressive reptile collection.
Their rattlesnake collection is still considered one of the best in the world. The Staten Island zoo is also home to 2 celebrity animals, namely Chuck the groundhog who is the official Groundhog Day forecaster for New York City and is part of the ritual where the groundhog’s movements predict whether spring will come early that year. The other is Grandpa, a spider monkey who correctly predicted the outcomes of 7 out of 9 of the U.S. Open Tennis Championship. The Staten Island Zoo is a small, eclectic attraction and makes for a nice break away from the usual tourist hotspots.
