Popularly known as Whitney, the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan was established in 1931 and features a permanent collection emphasizing on twentieth and twenty first century American art.
The permanent collection since the nineteenth century till date comprises over 25000 drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, films, prints, videos and new media artifacts from over 3500 artists. While exhibiting artworks from living artists and those from the early twentieth century, the museum holds biennial and annual exhibitions for lesser-known and younger artists. Tickets are to be booked in advance and cost USD 25 for adults, USD 18 for students, seniors and disabled visitors and free for visitors aged 18 and below. The museum is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 11:30 PM till 6 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon till 6 PM except on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
