Freedom Beach, Phuket Overview

Freedom Beach is a pristine 300m stretch of white sand peppered with granite rocks and surrounded by lush green hills full of jungles. The unique location of Freedom Beach gives it an exceptional feel. Although it wasn't easy to access this beach earlier, it has become much simpler to go to via longtail boats nowadays.

Freedom Beach also has two mini-goals for soccer and posts for beach volleyball. Unfortunately, Freedom Beach is mostly accessible by the Longtail boat. The longtail boat season is highest during the high season, which usually is from December to June. Though both the northern and the southern tip of Freedom Island has plenty of coral reefs, the reefs on the southern side are more colourful and striking.

Things To Do At The Beach

  • You could rent a sun lounger and an umbrella for just THB 120 at the 'One n Only Restaurant & Bar' on the southern side of Freedom Beach.
  • Since the waters are clean, you could go for a peaceful swim depending on the beach timings.
  • The northern and southern shallow tips of this beach house an incredible variety of underwater flora and fauna, thus, this is a perfect snorkelling spot.
  • Whether its soccer, volleyball, this undisturbed little island is a beautiful place to get sporty.
  • Whether it is digging a mock trench, building a sandcastle or simply goofing around with sand, you could spend some quality time with your child or kids here.
  • You can pack lunch or brunch, and head to Freedom Island for a picnic.
  • Lunch at the 'One n Only Restaurant & Bar' on this beach, if you are not in the mood to pack a lunch. With a capacity of around 120 seats, the restaurant is a little shaded haven surrounded by palm and pergola trees. Serving an extensive Thai menu and a few international dishes, the One n Only Restaurant & Bar can be a little overpriced.

How To Reach Freedom Beach

You can reach Freedom boat either via longtail boat from the southern end of Patong Beach or could hike up a bike ride or even walk. A ten-minute Longtail boat ride can charge between THB 1100 to THB 3500 depending on the season, people and negotiation.

By Road
If you want to go by road, follow the path that climbs up the hill from at the southern end of Patong Bay. Turn left at Amari Coral Beach, pass in front of Baan Yin Dee Resort and. Take a left towards Avista Hideaway Resort at the bottom of the hill, which is 700m from the Freedom Beach parking lot.

Via Patong-Karon Road
You could also go via the road from Patong to Karon Beach. If you are coming from Patong, the path to Freedom Beach is on the right, which is right after Rasta Baby Bar.

It costs THB 100 to park your bike at the Freedom Beach parking lot. Two locals would ensure bike security. However, a road trip to Freedom Beach is an exhausting one, take the longtail boat in case you are unsure of the road journey.

Visitor Tips

  • Use lots of sunscreen.
  • Take waterproof sunglasses for the journey.
  • Wear comfortable flip-flops or waterproof shoes.
  • Wear comfortable clothing over your bathing suit or snorkelling suit, so that it is easy to move around and take them off just before a water sport.
  • Carry a towel and umbrella, if you are planning to lounge around the northern side of the beach. There are no shacks or restaurants that would rent these facilities.
  • Avoid snorkelling alone, and snorkel with a swimmer. Since there are no trainers here, personal safety is in the traveller's hands.
  • Walk by the Freedom Beach only if you are sure of your fitness.
  • Stay calm with longtail boat riders and try to bargain as much as possible.
