Heroine's Monument Phuket

The Heroines Monument also called Thao Thep Kasattri Thao Si Sunthon Monument is one of the historical landmarks in "pearl of the Andaman," Phuket. The statues of "two heroines," Chan and Mook, was built to honour these brave women who led an army, consisting of mostly women, to drive off the 18th-century Burmese invasion.

The Governor of the town of Thalang, husband of Lady Chan, unfortunately, died before the Burmese attacks. Instead of fleeing back to safety, Lady Chan convinced the island's women to dress up as male soldiers to give the illusion of looking heavier like men along with her sister Mook. Although heavily outnumbered by the Burmese army, the women's skills to fight off the army led them to victory.

Erupted in 1967, the Heroines Monument is located at the roundabout traffic at the heart of the city. There is also a small shrine underneath the monument where visitors can pay their respect with marigold flowers, gold leaf, and incense sticks. People usually bring these items before they enter Phuket or purchase them at the stalls nearby. Thao Thepkasattri-Thao Sri Suntorn, an annual festival packed in loads of cultural and sporting events are organized every March.
