Poipet Tourism

Poipet is a city located in Ou Chrov district in Banteay Meanchey Province in western Cambodia. It is on the border with Thailand and is a popular city for tourists crossing the border by land and also a transport hub for travellers moving between Cambodia and Thailand.

The city is extremely famous for its many casinos and is a popular gambling destination for tourists visiting Cambodia as well as Thailand. Poipet is also close to, Sisophon, which is used as a base by travellers for exploring the Angkorian ruin Banteay Chhmar temple complex.

Poipet came into existence recently for enabling land border entry for tourists between Thailand and Cambodia. It has grown into a huge market with the influx of casinos and pubs in recent years, making it the fourth most populous city in Cambodia.

Casinos

Casinos are the most popular attractions in the city of Poipet. Gambling is illegal in both Thailand and Cambodia, but the rules don't apply to foreigners who can visit without having to head to immigration. Hence a lot of international travellers hit these casinos for fun. Some of the popular casinos are Star Vegas - the most visited casino, Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casinos, Crown Casinos and Tropicana.

Tips

  • Poipet is notorious for scams targeting international travellers. Some of them include the Visa and bus tickets scams. If you are arriving in Cambodia from Thailand and need a Visa, it's best to head straight to the immigration centre. You will encounter a lot of agents who approach with the prospects of securing an express visa, quick visa and other names. Stay away from these agents as they triple the visa costs, and it is possible to get a visa easily directly from the official Cambodia immigration centre at the border.

  • Similarly, a lot of tour operators approach tourists claiming to sell cheap bus tickets for public buses, which are scam tickets. Avoid booking bus tickets at any of these agents, tour companies and intermediaries in Poipet.

  • It is best to book buses online or through your guesthouses and hotels (who also charge slightly higher for tourists). It is not safe for tourists to carry too much cash or to be on the streets late at night.

  • Avoid deserted roads or being out after shops close. Not all casinos are free of scams and some hefty charge fees just for admission. Do a check before trying out any of them.
