1008 Lingam Temple, Salem Overview

Located in Ariyanoor, about 14 km away from Salem, 1008 Lingam is one of the most famous temples of the city. Devoted to Lord Shiva, the temple has 1008 Lingams placed in a way which 1007 Lingams surround the main one. The 1008th Lingam is the one with the statue of Nandi (a holy cow) placed in the front. The temple was constructed in 2010 and is managed by a private department under the Vinayaka Mission.

What to Expect - Architecture and History of the Temple

As soon as you pass the temple's main gate at the foothills, you will notice a magnificent statue of Lord Ganesha. Feel free to wander and talk to the locals. The security guards are helpful and will guide you towards the route which you have to take to reach the hilltop.

The path to the top is full of scenic natural beauty which is best experienced on foot. You can either park your vehicles and stroll upwards or drive to the top. The 1000 Lingams in here are named after Lord Shiva's 1000 names. You will come across them when you head upwards and stop by and offer prayers if you wish to. The Sangagiri Mountains in the backdrop create a breathtaking sight for your eyes and a tranquil environment for your mind. You will also come across beautiful Lord Muruga sculptures on your way, which only complement the temple's surroundings.

On the top lies an incredible statue of Sri Umayambigai Sametha Sri Arunachala Sundareswara, the main deity. A sight to behold, the beauty of the sculpture truly justifies a long walk to the hilltop. It stands tall at 17 meters.

One can easily spend a whole evening here and immerse themselves in the religiosity that lingers in the air.

The temple also allows photography and videography for you to capture its beauty. There are food stalls available where you can sit and have a snack after offering prayers. The temple also has locker facilities to keep extra baggage and valuables.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the temple is in the winter months of November to February. The weather is an absolute delight during this time and evening strolls combined with tea here makes the whole experience worth cherishing. Temperatures range between 18 degrees C to 28 degrees C.

How to Reach

As the temple is located only 14 km away from Salem, you can easily hire a taxi or an auto rickshaw. Private vehicles are also allowed on the premises.
