Conveniently located off a major connecting highway, San Onofre Bluffs Campground is tucked into naturally formed sandstone bluffs beside a beach. The campground offers access to several descending trails that lead to the San Onofre beach popular for swimming and surfing. You can also hike and go mountain biking upwards from the campground along six rugged trails cutting into the bluff above.
San Onofre Bluffs Campground has one site in San Mataeo Canyon and another along the Pacific Coast. With bays to the south and verdant tropics to the east, the cemented ground comes with plenty of spacious sites, each fitted with picnic tables and stoves. You can pitch your own tents and bring RVs or caravans here. The beach trails are relatively flat and easy for bikers while hiking up the steep rocky hills is just as exhilarating, but it takes a pro to climb to the summit. With abundant distance from the main road, this campground is perfect for being lulled by the ocean to sleep or enjoying serene bonfires and grilled food. The cool weather, broad ocean views and excellent spots for birdwatching make San Onofre Bluffs Campground one of the best of its kind for those who want to escape the heat.
