Kali Bari Temple, Shimla Overview

Kali Bari Temple of Shimla is an ancient place of worship dedicated to Goddess Kali. It was built in 1845 and is considered of immense religious importance for the devotees. The shrine houses a captivating idol of Goddess Kali beautifully adorned with jewellery and colourful flowers.

Located in Shimla, very close to the Shimla City Mall, it is often visited by devotees in large number. The temple premise is kept clean and is well-maintained, and devotees can sit for hours here absorbing the heavenly vibe. Many prefer chanting or meditating here to contemplate issues they are facing as they seek power and energy from Goddess Kali to face and fight them.

Locals believe that Goddess Kali lived on Jakhoo Hill which was the location of an ancient temple that was later relocated to Kali Bari by the British. Locals also know Goddess Kali as Goddess Shyamala. The name of the city, Shimla, was derived from the Goddesses' name. A large number of devotees visit the Kali Bari Temple seeking Goddess Kali's blessings and to offer her prayers during the festival of Navratri.

The evening aarti at the divine temple should be witnessed. The site of devotees getting immersed in the holy verses chanted by the Kali Bari temple priests is another sight to witness.

Must Know Before You Visit Kali Bari Temple

Note : 1. One will spot many monkeys around the temple. It is advisable that they keep their belongings safe as the monkeys could snatch them.
2. Photography is not allowed inside the temple premise.
3. The temple is located on a hilltop. Although the climb isn't exhausting, tourists may want to reconsider visiting the temple if they have physical/medical issues.
4. The temple premise also has a Guest House and a Canteen for tourists who wish to stay nearby. The canteen serves simple but delicious Bengali food during lunch and dinner time.

Best Time to Visit

Kali Bari temple can be visited during the tourist season between October and May. Also, Navratri is celebrated in October-November every year for nine days. The best time to visit the temple is in the evening at 7:00 PM to partake in the evening aarti.

How To Reach Kali Bari Temple

Kali Bari temple is located very close to Shimla City Mall on Kali Bari Road. Tourists can walk or hire an auto rickshaw to reach the temple from the Mall Road.
