Santa Maria della Scala is a historic hospital complex located directly opposite Siena Cathedral in Piazza del Duomo. Dating back to the 12th century, it once served as a pilgrim shelter and charitable hospital and is now a museum showcasing frescoes, archaeological artifacts, and Renaissance art. Visitors can explore its underground chambers, chapels, and collections that reflect Siena’s cultural and religious heritage.
The hospital was known for its many philanthropic endeavours. Cast-off babies were often raised by the hospital. The hospital also served meals for the poor three times a week. Eventually they started employing one doctor and one surgeon. Eventually it became a training ground for doctors. The art of this complex consists mainly of frescoes and altarpieces.
