Origin of Grand Prix in Singapore

Inaugurated in1961, the Formula 1 Grand Prix used to be managed by Formula Libre, and the race was known as the Orient Year Grand Prix. A year later, the name of this event was changed to the Malaysian Grand Prix. After Singapore attained its independence in 1965, the organisation came up with yet another name, the Singapore Grand Prix. Back then, the race used to be held at the Thomson Road circuit. After the racing event held in 1973 reached completion, it was discontinued after that owing to some reasons, including traffic issues and safety problems.

It was in 2008 when this grand event came back to life as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, after the Singapore Tourism Board, Singapore GP Pte Ltd, and the CEO of the Formula One Management, Bernie Ecclestone signed a five-year contract, and the Government of Singapore decided to co-fund the event. The Formula 1 Grand Prix will certainly be held every year until at least 2021, owing to the extension of the agreement that was signed by the organisers in 2017. In 2012, the previous contract extension was agreed upon between the Formula One Management and the race organisers which lasted till 2017.
