"A Perfect Beach Holiday Island"

Skopelos Tourism

Located in the east of mainland Greece, between Skiathos and Alonissos, Skopelos is an island in Sporades known for its rich vegetation, exotic beaches, and quaint villages. Some of the towns and villages on the island are popular for their unique architecture and photogenic sceneries. One of the greenest islands in the Aegean sea, it is known among couples and families. Skopelos gained public attention through the movie 'Mamma Mia' and became a known holiday destination in Greece.

There are limited organised activities to do on Skopelos. The island mostly offers a relaxing holiday by the beach or countryside. Skopelos, also popular for its sprawling vineyards, plum orchards and olive groves, is a perfect place to relax away from crowds. Sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, and swimming are popular activities. Walking the trails in the hilly interiors of the island is another activity that tourists prefer to indulge in when they have more time on the island. Island is also home to over 360 chapels and churches alongside some monasteries.

Skopelos island is known for its beautiful scenic villages. Among these, 'Chora' or Skopelos town is the main one. It features whitewashed, red-roofed buildings conveniently cascading down to the water from the hilltop. It is also a port and serves as a hub of shops, restaurants, cafes, and taverns that is the main attraction among tourists. Apart from Skopelos town, other important villages on Skopelos island are Glossa and Elios. Other hamlets in Skopelos include Stafylos, Agnontas, Panormos, and Klima.

History of Skopelos

Minoans had been settling in Skopelos since 1600 BC. The island was then taken by the Dolopians and converted into a military base. When the island came under the rule of people from Chalkis, three settlements of Panormos (today's Glossa), Selinos (today's Loutraki) and Peparithos (Skopelos town) were built. During Roman rule, Skopelos' trade flourished. It was then ruled by the Venetians, destroyed by pirates and went under the Ottoman rule in subsequent years. Skopelos became free from Ottoman rule in 1821.
