Zero Bridge, Srinagar Overview

Zero Bridge is a tourist attraction in the southeastern part of Srinagar city. It is a bridge over the Jhelum river that holds aesthetic and cultural value, hence its place as a crucial tourist spot. The wooden bridge with details over the tranquil waters makes the location surreal during the day and night.

It is a popular place to hang out, take good photographs, and mingle with locals or other tourists. The central location of the bridge even places you in the Church Lane area, from where you can travel to settlements on either side of the river.

Currently, pedestrians can cross the bridge as the vehicle flow stopped in the 1980s. The wooden structure is too weak to support traffic, but it can hold the weight of tourists moving across. The whole bridge and the river view is an Instagram-worthy location, and you can see it frequently on social media posts of Srinagar.

Must Know Before You Visit Zero Bridge

Note : It is best to reach Zero Bridge by taxi, on foot, or using public transportation. The bridge itself is a pedestrian bridge that leads you to the other side of Jhelum, so your own vehicle may restrict your movement.

Zero Bridge History

The Zero Bridge is one of the younger monuments in the city, built only in the 1950s. It was when Jammu and Kashmir was under the rule of Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Muhammad. Earlier, it served the purpose of a vehicular bridge, but that changed rapidly. Around the 1980s, the bridge’s structural integrity rapidly declined. Some support and planks fell or broke, so the bridge could not support heavier weights. The government had to close the flow of vehicles for the civilians’ safety.

Zero Bridge Etymology

As for its name, you can find two theories circulating online. The first one suggests that Zero Bridge relates to the number, as it got constructed before the official first bridge of Srinagar- the Amira Kadal Bridge.

However, another perspective explores that the bridge got named after the contractor who took the project. He was a deaf person, which in Kashmir translates to ‘Zorr’. So his name led to the bridge’s name being Zorr too. To simplify pronunciation, it got converted into Zero Bridge sometime later.

Zero Bridge Importance

Even though it may seem lackluster in front of other Mughal monuments, the Zero Bridge has garnered ample attention. It is a social hotspot where people enjoy having local cuisine and exploring the history of J&K from up close.
Hence, you can find multiple street food delicacies on the street. You can even find handicraft and art stores near the bridge to take souvenirs home. It is most active during afternoons and evenings, though it is always open.

How to Reach Zero Bridge

Moving eastward on the MA Road, take a right turn onto the Choont Kul Bund. Continue travelling strainght on the road and you will find the bridge at the road’s end. 15-18 minutes by taxi/private vehicle from city centre.
