Bacau is the second largest city of the country, and is known for its colonial architecture as well as natural beauty.
Much of the city's infrastructure was destroyed as the Indonesians wreaked havoc when they left the country after the referendum of 1999. Still, the Portuguese colonial era charm is manifested in the old town's large colonial mansions and churches that have survived the test of time and have caught the fancy of its visitors. One can also explore the caves created by the Japs during World War II in the south or if you wish to relax in the laps of nature, head further south to the villages of Ossu and Viqueque known for their freshwater rivers, waterfalls and natural caves.
