The royal residence of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, the Imperial Palace is the site of the Edo-jo, or the old palace of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan. The imperial buildings and inner gardens are open only the public on January 2nd (New YearsÍ Greetings) and December 23rd (The EmperorÍs birthday) annually. Tours which are conducted through the year (lasting one hour and fifteen minutes) should be booked on the Imperial Household AgencyÍs website as early as possible (preferably 15-20 days before). Imperial East Gardens with their scenic beauty and the outer compounds are open to the public.

Tips For Visiting Tokyo Royal Palace

  • Most of the palace is off-limits. The East Gardens may be accessed throughout the year. Guided tours offered by the Imperial Household Agency let you see a small part of the inner compound.
  • Guided tours are in Japanese.
  • Only on January 2 (New Year's Greeting) and December 23 (Emperor's Birthday), visitors are able to enter the inner palace grounds and see the members of the Imperial Family, who make several public appearances on a balcony.
