Turkistan is a major pilgrimage site in Kazakhstan, primarily due to the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a revered Sufi saint. The city has attracted pilgrims since the Timurid era, such as Yasawi's mausoleum, an impressive structure with intricate blue and turquoise tiles. You can explore the mausoleum’s interior, featuring a large bronze kazan, and the tombs of prominent Kazakh leaders and sages, the nearby 15th-century mausoleum of Rabia Sultan Begim, the mausoleum of Esim Khan, and the underground Hilvet mosque.
In recent years, Turkistan has seen modern development alongside its historic significance. The Karavansaray, a newly built entertainment complex has an array of shops, restaurants, and cultural performances. It features a canal with boat rides, an equestrian show arena, and the 8D Golden Egg cinema, offering a mix of historical allure and modern entertainment.
Turkistan is also surrounded by historical sites that make for fascinating day trips. About 60 km southeast, you’ll find the mausoleum of Arystan Bab. Nearby are the ancient ruins of Otrar, once a thriving Silk Road city, it now offers a glimpse into its former glory through archaeological remains and an on-site museum. Further afield, you can visit the mausoleum of Ukash Ata and the ancient city walls of Sauran, both of which provide insight into Kazakhstan’s rich history.
Buses and taxis from Shymkent provide convenient access to Turkistan, and once in the city, local transport options are available for sightseeing. You can enjoy a range of dining options from traditional Kazakh dishes to modern cafés, as well as a traditional stay within the Karavansaray complex. With its unique blend of historical, spiritual, and modern attractions, Turkistan offers a well-rounded travel experience for both pilgrims and tourists.
