Gulabh Bagh and Zoo, Udaipur Overview

Gulab Bagh Zoo is located in the most abundant garden called Gulab Bagh and implicit to the name it has a variety of well-maintained roses. The mini zoo within the garden is a short walk away from the rose gardens. A very few numbers of species of animals are housed in this zoo including the wide-eyed owls and has enough places to visit within the vicinity like the toy train which is open to the kids and the adults. There is an enormous artificial water body called Kamal Talai which adds to the palace like the beauty of the Garden and a Navlakha Mahal, a religious place for parents to visit.

Things to Do in Gulab Bagh and Zoo

  • Gulab Bagh has also something special to offer to the tiny tots- a zoo which houses a wide range of fauna species such as Zebras, Rhinos, Ostriches, Black Leopards, Chinkaras, Hoolock Gibbons and many more rare species from different parts of the world.
  • Inside the Gulab Bagh and Zoo complex, there are also several other attractions such as an artificial lake, a toy train, library, restaurants, places of worship such as temples and mosques.
  • The tagline for the toy train which goes around the park taking its occupants on a merry ride is, “Bacchon ki Rail Gaadi, Bade bhi Karein Sawari” which simply translates that the toy train can be enjoyed by the young and the old alike. The train starts from the Luv Kush Station and after covering the perimeter of the entire Gulab Garden & Zoo reaches back to the same station.
  • If you are not in a mood to cover the park on foot, hopping on the toy train to cover the park is all you need to do.
  • The Lotus Pond or the Kamal Talai, is oval shaped and boasts of fascinating connectivity over the pond through four different bridges. It is located in the north-east part of the Gulab Garden.
  • The Miraj Jyotish Upvan is a garden in which plants with medicinal benefits are grown. The pathway around the park has been constructed with the special purpose of providing free acupressure therapy to those who walk on it.
  • The Saraswati Bhawan Library with awe-inspiring architecture treasure books and manuscripts which are centuries old.

History of Gulab Bagh and Zoo

Gulab Bagh was the brainchild of Maharana Sajjan Singh. The construction of the park started in 1881 and was also known as the Sajjan Niwas Garden among the locals. According to the native of Udaipur, Gulab Bagh used to organize grand vegetable and flower shows in the ancient times. For the entertainment of the royal family members, fights between the animals of the zoo were also frequently organized.
