The Old Slave Market in Stone Town, Zanzibar, hosts the Anglican Cathedral, built in 1879 by British missionaries on the site of East Africa's last permanent slave market. Divided into three areas, the cathedral showcases Christian architecture and includes the Slaves Monument and Slaves Chamber, highlighting the history of the slave trade.
Guided tours provide detailed insights into the site's history. Constructed over seven years, the cathedral is known for its coral stone composition and Saracenic design, blending influences from Zanzibar and the Middle East. Beyond its architectural beauty, the cathedral carries a powerful message, symbolizing the end of slavery. Sunday morning services are held at the cathedral in both English and Swahili. The service times are posted on a notice on the porch.
