Spectacular Beaches in Wellington for Refreshing Getaway

Oriental Bay is a man-made beach which is a popular spot for tourists and the locals. From swimming, views and the walks, this beach has got it all. In the year 2002, Wellington City Council expanded the Oriental beach and Freyberg beach by bringing 22,000 tonnes of sand from Wainui Bay. The oriental beach is also known for the Carter Memorial Fountain, which is named after Hugh Carter, who made a large contribution to building the fountain. If you get hungry after a nice swim at the beach or a soak in the sun, being the closest beach to Wellington city centre, there are many popular cafes and restaurants in and around to serve your hunger.

Lyall Bay is Wellington’s most popular beach, located on the South coast, Lyall Bay. This beach is known for surfing and features two Surf Lifesaving Clubs which are more than 100 years old now. There is also a famous cafe on top of this club. Located just 2 km away from the Wellington International Airport, one can lay on the sand and watch the planes landing at the airport. Lyall Bay is the largest beach in central Wellington. The Eastern end of this beach is a popular spot for dog training.

Scorching Bay is a popular crescent-shaped sandy roadside beach. However, the quickest route is to get through the Miramar Peninsula.

Fishing in Island Bay is strictly prohibited as it is a part of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve. Scuba diving is also offered by some companies.

Just like its name says this beach has red rocks that were formed about 200 years ago. Red Rocks is known for a coastal hike more than walking or just laying on the beach. But, if you’re lucky enough, you can come across some seals during the months of April to October. The Sundays are specially for walkers and mountain hikers on this beach.

The best way to begin enjoying the beauty of this beach will be taking the Easy by West Ferry from the Wellington Waterfront to reach Days Bay. You can participate in various watersports, take a walk in the hills or take a look at the art galleries. All types of sports equipment for activities like kayaking, mountain biking, fishing gear, and cricket sets can be hired here.

Makara beach is a great spot for diving and fishing. It not only offers a sandy shore but also consists of a 6 km hiking trail that leads to a beautiful scenic view. The walkaway for this trail begins and ends at the beach itself.

Petone beach offers stunning views of the Wellington harbour. There are so many parks and reserves around the beach. It is great to swim here during summer. The Jackson street, which is at a walkable distance from the beach, is lined up with lots of cafes and boutique shops.
