What is the best time to visit Finland?

The best time to visit Finland is from May to September, with temperatures ranging from 10–25°C, for Sightseeing, and September to March, with temperatures from -5 to -30°C, for Northern lights sighting. May to September is ideal for sightseeing with sufficient daylight hours. June, July, and August offer the warmest temperatures, with 24-hour daylight in the north (Midnight Sun). October to March is best for skiing, husky sledding, and Santa Claus Village visits. It is also the best time to see the Northern Lights, especially in Lapland, where nights are longest. Rainfall is common in Finland irrespective of whichever month you pick to travel, carry necessary clothing.

May & September (Shoulder Season - Spring/Autumn): May (Spring) and September (Autumn) offer milder temperatures, stunning landscapes, and fewer tourists. In September, Northern Lights season begins, while May marks the return of greenery and celebrations. In May, temperatures range from 10–18°C, and spring blooms can be seen in the south, like in Helsinki. In September, temperatures hover around  5–15°C, and it's perfect to see autumn colors and Northern light without snow in Lapland. Overall, for good weather and lower prices, visit in May or September.

June to August (Peak Season - Summer): is Finland’s warmest and busiest season, with long daylight hours, pleasant temperatures ranging around 15–25°C, and vibrant festivals. In Lapland, the sun doesn’t set for weeks, making it perfect for late-night hikes and lake activities. Midsummer Festival in June celebrates the longest day of the year with bonfires and parties. Rainfall measures 40–60mm per month, occasional showers. July is the warmest month, but also the busiest. If you prefer fewer crowds, visit in early June or late August for milder weather and lower prices.

November–April (Offseason - Autumn/Winter): These months in Finland transform the country into a snowy paradise, perfect for skiing, husky sledding, and Santa Claus visits. It’s also the best time to see the Northern Lights, especially in Lapland, where nights are longest. November and December, with temperatures around -5 to 5°C (23–41°F), is when heavy snowfall starts. From January to March, with temperatures hovering around -10 to -30°C, are the coldest months. In April, snow starts to melt.

Northern Lights Season in Lapland (Levi, Saariselkä, Rovaniemi) is from September–March, but for the best opportunities try September–October & February–March.
