"The home of Lord Krishna"

Dwarka Tourism

Located on the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat, Dwarka is believed to be the capital city of Lord Krishna's kingdom. Known as Devbhoomi Dwarka, Dwarka boasts of being the only city that is a part of both Char Dham (four principal holy places) and also Sapta Puris (seven sacred cities) mentioned in the Hindu religion. Dwarka was a part of the ancient kingdom of Krishna and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is also located in Dwarka. The beachside and the seashores are an added tourist attraction.

Legend has it that the city was once engulfed by the sea and recent excavations reveal that a city did exist here. The name Dwarka translates to dwar meaning 'door' and ka meaning 'moksha' meaning the ‘door to salvation.

Regional Traditions of Dwarka

Besides being an ancient city, Dwarka also upholds bits of the lifestyle from those times with its traditions. One such tradition is giving rice at the temple of Guru Vallabhacharya at Beyt Dwarka. It is believed that Lord Krishna's childhood friend, Sudama used to provide the former with rice.

A variety of such religious beliefs and customs are carried out at the temples here as well. Funeral rites, also known as 'Pind Daan' in some regions are traditionally observed in Dwarka as well. These practices are mostly held at the Gomti Ghat region of the city.

Dwarka History

Dwarka is said to have housed traceable marks of human occupancy since the 200 AD. Besides hosting honorable mentions in the Hindu epic of Mahabharat, the holy city of Dwarka is also speculated to have been Gujarat's first capital city.

Apart from the Hindu mythical transcripts about Dwarka being the land of Lord Krishna, history holds records of archaelogical evidences from the 1400s. It is said that the present-day Dwarkadhish temple was built during the 1500s.

However, the proto-history of the region clarifies Dwarka to have once been a submerged land that was further excavated to its current existence. The region's Bet/Beyt Dwarka is said to be a significant historic site belonging to the Late Harappan times.

It is observed during the Hindu month of Shravan. Other celebrations such as Diwali, Holi and Dussehra are also observed.

The commonly spoken language in Dwarka is Gujarati, however, Hindi and English are also among the local dialect. Another cultural highlight of the region is its cuisine. Dwarka is an unflinchingly vegetarian city, where flavours of Gujarat are presented alongside local ingredients and dietary staples.

Architecture and Temples in Dwarka

Being one of the places for the sacred Char Dham Yatra, Dwarka is an important pilgrimage spot which holds a great value in the Indian mythology. Dotted with several temples, Dwarkadhish temple is the most famous temple here.

Being a non-religious person, I was initially reluctant to visit Dwarka when my parents asked me to. However, contrary to what I had expected, this city turned out to be way more than a mere pilgrima (Read More)ge site. The Dwarkadhish temple’s intricate architecture, a very interesting history, and even its religious significance make it a must visit attraction, just beware of the money-making pandits. Dwarka is a lovely place for peace seekers. Dwarka beach is one of the most underrated beaches of India, maybe that’s what makes it so good. Apart from that, watching the sun slowly dive into the sea from the sunset point, while eating chana jor garam amid sea breeze is an experience not to miss!
