I have no doubt that it used to be a 5 star establishment in the past, but it can no longer be classified as such.
The public spaces are beautifully decorated and clean. However the rooms are grimy and need attention. We had 2 bedrooms. Both had a terrible sewerage smell coming from their bathrooms.
On arrival, we received a beautifully presented cheese plate and a bottle of wine in our room. However, there was no knife to cut the cheese, no crackers to eat the cheese with and no glasses to drink the wine. One would think it would be simply enough to have room service deliver the items to the room. We phoned the concierge to ask if the missing items could please be delivered to our room. The lady who took the call, told us that they dont normally do that and that she would need to check. Why would they provide a cheese plate and wine if they didnt want guests to consume it? After numerous follow ups, we finally received the knife, crackers and glasses, 24 hours later! Yes, it took an entire day to deliver the items to the room.
The food at the restaurants is very basic and far from 5 star. Its mass produced to optimise the establishments profits with very little regard for the guests who are paying. Added to this, the service is very slow and some of the waiting staff were very curt and inattentive. On one occasion we waited over 30 minutes for two drinks. The drinks were not complicated, they didnt need to be made, just poured. We found the waitresses at the main pool to be especially rude. We had to politely ask one in particular to please not be so angry with us after she made us feel very unwelcome. She went on to explain that it was too busy and she was the only person covering that particular area. Still, that is no excuse for a bad attitude and poor service.
On one occasion, we found the pool to be over subscribed. I understand allowing day visitors in, but it should not be at the expense of hotel guests.
