Are you aware of the London Eye Ferris Wheel, which is one of the most visited tourist attractions in London situated on the banks of the River Thames? If yes, then you should be hopeful as the Maharashtra government is all set with their plans to install a similar Ferris wheel in the city of Mumbai. They told that the ‘Mumbai Eye’ will be an interesting way for tourists to experience the bird’s-eye view of the city’s skyline. The Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has proposed to install it at an abandoned site near Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The proposal was discussed in a cabinet meeting held on January 15, 2020.
The proposal of the project is that it will be undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has been chosen as the proposed location. Permissions need to be taken from various departments, and also Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) need to be checked before moving ahead with the plan. According to the proposal, there will be capsules in the slow-moving Ferris wheel just like the ones present in the London Eye and it will help the tourists to have a view of the surroundings.
Deputy Chief Minister's Opinion
The Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, was the one who highlighted this proposal and said that a lot of funds are needed to turn the idea of the ‘Mumbai Eye’ into a reality. He said that he has already been consulting with financial advisors to bring a change in the amount of revenue.
The Reason for ‘Mumbai Eye’
SourceAccording to the Cabinet, the main motivation for building the ‘Mumbai Eye’ is to attract more tourists from outside as well as from inside the city. Similar Ferris Wheels have already been installed around the world in Singapore, Nanchang and Las Vegas. The London Eye itself attracts 3.75 million tourists every year. This isn’t the first time that the idea has been proposed. Similar ideas were proposed in 2008 and 2014 but weren't executed.
