"The Ionian Beach City "

Argostoli Tourism

The town and municipality of Argostoli is located on the island of Kefalonia, among the Ionian islands in Greece. This seaside town is popular for housing over 39 beaches with a quaint and picturesque setting. Home to the largest shipping port in the Ionian islands, the town of Argostoli is the capital and the island's largest city.

The main tourist attraction in Argostoli is the Caretta-Caretta turtles, which feed in the nearby Koutavos Lagoon. In addition, there are stores, restaurants, cafes, and a lively harbour with numerous fishing boats. Open-air theatres, a range of religious and cultural festivals, boat tours, yacht rentals, and two tourist trains that tour the city in the height of the tourist season are all available in the city centre. A tiny museum devoted to the cultural and social history of Kefalonia, the Focas Kosmetatos Foundation, is located in one of the few buildings that survived the 1953 earthquake of Argostoli.

Also known as Kephalonia or Cephalonia, the waterfront at Argostoli is situated along Ioannou Metaxou. This long promenade is usually crowded during the evening as it is considered an excellent place for walking. Argostoli is one of the most famous Greek island towns, there is something to do for everyone here, and families usually prefer it for a good vacation.

Must Know Before You Travel to Argostoli

  • A  ferry connects Argostoli with the neighboring town of Lixouri; departures typically occur once every half-hour, and the trip takes around 20 minutes each way.
  • If you are in Argostoli to spot the rare loggerhead turtle, you should visit docks and beaches along Ioannou Metaxou in the morning, before the boats come in. If you see a group of people gathered at a spot, chances are that they have spotted a few. The waterfront along Ioannou Metaxou is a long promenade leading to the small pine shaded beaches towards the north of Argostoli.
  • The modern bus terminal connects Argostoli with surrounding towns and villages on the island and with Athens; Patras is located between the De-Bosset Bridge and the Koutavos Lagoon.
  • The Lixouri boat runs once an hour in the winter and twice an hour in the summer;  it serves as the primary ferry port linking Argostoli with the main island through Kyllini and Zakynthos.
  • Accommodation is usually costly throughout the town.
  • Transit Bus services are offered between the airport and the town of Argostoli only in the summer. The terminal facility is in front of a public bus stop, and tourists can purchase tickets directly from the bus driver.
