Atal Bridge, Ahmedabad Overview

The Atal Bridge in Ahmedabad stands as an iconic structure, being the first of its kind in the country. Spanning the Sabarmati Riverfront, this glass bridge, inspired by the vibrancy of the Kite Festival, connects the east and west parts of the river. Solely intended for pedestrians, the bridge offers seating arrangements for individuals to revel in the river's beauty. The project, inaugurated in August 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a testament to architectural brilliance and creativity.

History

The idea for the Atal Bridge was conceived in March 2018, and construction was completed by June 2022. Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the bridge reflects the colors and joy of the Uttrayan celebration. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the bridge connects Sardar Bridge and Ellis Bridge, providing a unique pedestrian experience.

Architecture

Designed by STUP Consultants Ltd and built by P&R Infraprojects Ltd, the Atal Bridge is a single-span steel truss bridge with a rhombus-shaped cross-section, mirroring the form of kites. The elevation of the truss gives the impression of an arch supported on spherical bearings. The bridge is adorned with colorful fabric panels inspired by kites, providing shade and protection. The steel and glass railings, LED lighting, and a length of 300 meters contribute to its architectural grandeur.

Significance

The Atal Bridge has become more than a mere pathway; it has transformed into a destination itself. Celebrating pedestrian connectivity and acting as a focal point for equilibrium in city planning, the bridge is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. It has augmented the status of the Riverfront and Ahmedabad City, becoming an engineering marvel and a symbol of civic pride.
