The Kumbh mela is held every 12 years in 4 locations - Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. However, the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj is considered the largest and grandest of them all. Prayagraj hosts the Kumbh Mela at Triveni Sangam, where the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati converge.
The event spans 55 days and includes rituals such as bathing, devotional singing, religious discussions, and feeding the poor. Unique to the Kumbh are the diverse sects of Hindu sadhus, including ash-smeared Naga Sadhus, silent Parivajakas, and meditative Shirshasins, who add to the festival's otherworldly atmosphere, while the practice of ‘Darshan’—the respectful observation of these holy men—remains a revered ritual.

The four sites of Kumbh Mela are believed to be the locations where drops of Amrita fell from its Kumbh or pot while it was carried by a Deva, to protect it from the hands of the Asuras. The four drops fell onto Prayag, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain, giving these sites mystical properties. The four holiest rivers flow through these areas, forming the site of the bathing ritual. It is believed that during the dates of the Kumbh Mela, the waters of the Sangam turn into Amrita, possessing divine properties which help the pilgrims come closer to attaining salvation.
