Column of Julian is a significant historical monument located in the Ulus district of Ankara. This ancient structure stands in a square surrounded by government buildings, notably between the old Ankara Governorship building and the current Social Sciences University building. The column, rising 15 meters high, is an exquisite piece of stone masonry. It features a fluted body composed of many grooved ring-shaped white stones.
The head of the column is adorned with intricate acanthus leaves, although the north-facing side of the capital has suffered damage over time. The base and body are relatively simple in design. Erected in 362 AD, the column honors the visit of Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate to Ankara. Although some claims suggest it may have been constructed later, its Byzantine-style design supports its 4th-century origin.
