Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp Overview

Museum Mayer van den Bergh offers an intimate glimpse into a remarkable private art collection established by Henriette Mayer van den Bergh to honor her son, Fritz Mayer van den Bergh, an avid art collector. It is popular for its unique collection, which includes masterpieces from the Gothic and Renaissance periods, most notably Pieter Bruegel the Elder's "Mad Meg" (Dulle Griet).

Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858–1901) dedicated his life to collecting art, focusing on works from the 14th to 16th centuries—a period that was underappreciated in his time. After his sudden death, his mother, Henriette, commissioned the construction of a neo-Gothic building to house his collection, inaugurating the museum in 1904. The collection boasts over a thousand pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and illuminated manuscripts. Highlights include the Mayer van den Bergh Breviary, a 16th-century illuminated manuscript, and works by artists such as Pieter Huys and Jan Gossaert.
