This gate, also known as Spalentor, was once a formidable one in the old walls of Basel in 1400, marking an entrance into the city.æ
Spalentor or the Gate of Spalen is one of the three remaining gateways to the city. Several people consider the Gate of Spalen to be the most beautiful of the lot. Apart from being a heritage site, this gate is also an important landmark of the city. Built using some really gorgeous bricks, it has a square-shaped main tower in the centre and two round towers on either side. It also sports a clock that tells the local time.æ
