Market Square (Markt) in Bruges, Belgium, is the city's historic heart, dating back to the 12th century. Located in the center of Bruges, it is surrounded by iconic landmarks such as the Belfry Tower and colorful guildhalls. The square hosts a bustling atmosphere with cafés, horse-drawn carriages, and a vibrant weekly market. It is one of the most photogenic places in Bruges.
Markt used to be an extremely busy Waterehalle, an underground warehouse where goods were loaded and unloaded by commercial ships for sale in the Market. Today the canals are still there, albeit underground. Get on board the horse-drawn carriages or buggies, while they whisk you away for a glimpse of the Neo-Gothic Provincial Hof, the Belfry, the brick made Huis Bouchoute, Cronenberg or even for a quick snack at the Frietkot,æfries stand. The cafes here although extremely irresistible from the outside, are quite a pocket pinch on the inside.
