Right on the foot of the Mokattam hill, the fortress of the Saladin Citadel is a vast complex known for its mosque and the view of historic Cairo from its minarets. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of three mosques and three museums inside the fort walls.
Named after the legendary Muslim leader Saladin, who fortified the Citadel during the 12th century, this historic complex has served as a seat of power and defense for successive rulers of Egypt. Among the highlights is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, with its iconic domes and towering minarets dominating the skyline. visitors can marvel at the intricate details of the mosque's interior, including its exquisite marble floors, stained glass windows, and intricately carved woodwork.
Adjacent to the mosque lies the Citadel's Military Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into Egypt's military history through a diverse collection of artifacts, weapons, and uniforms dating back to ancient times. Other notable attractions include the historic Well of Joseph, believed to date back to ancient times, and the National Police Museum, which sheds light on the role of law enforcement in Egyptian society.
