The Franciscan Monastery is located at the centre of Dubrovnik, next to the Holy Saviour Church. The building consists of a Franciscan cloister, an ancient pharmacy and a library. The Franciscan cloister is one of the most gorgeous place one ought to experience when in old town Dubrovnik
It was built around 1317, even though the construction lasted several centuries. In 1667 an earthquake destroyed most of the Franciscan Monastery but some remnants still stand highlighting its Gothic, Romanesque and Rennaissance styles. The building currently holds the world’s third oldest pharmacy on the planet and a library with over 70,000 books, 1200 out of which are age-old manuscripts of immeasurable value.
One peculiar story associated with the Franciscan Monastery is that of an ancient stone protruding from the wall with a face carved onto it. The stone is believed to grant wishes, if one can stand on it, take off and wear their shirt back again without falling off the stone, the face listens and grants the person’s wish
