Mutton Island, Galway Overview

Mutton Island is located near the Seafield Harbour in County Clare, on the West Coast of Ireland. It is famous for its picturesque landscapes, charming landmarks, and majestic coastal views along the Atlantic Ocean. The island also has a rich maritime history.

You can enjoy well-preserved grasslands, freshwater lakes and several springwater wells at this 185 acre island. The island's most famous landmark is the 19th century lighthouse, Maigh Tinne, with its white cylindrical body along the rugged coastline where it slopes gently from sea level on the east to a height of 110 feet over two kilometers to the west. One can go to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy amazing views. On the east side of the island there exists ruins of two cottages, a disused graveyard where people from the shipwreck are buried and the site of a cross and oratory, as well as several walled fields and two cannons from the ship planted there. The island also has two prehistoric forts, a church and a monastic settlement that were built by St. Senan back in 548 AD.
