Tambdi Surla, Goa Overview

Tambdi Surla, also called the Mahadev Temple Tambdi Surla is a 12th century Shaivite Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Known to be one of the oldest temples in Goa, the temple is built entirely black basalt and boasts of immense architectural beauty. The inner sanctum has a majestic Shiva linga and also an idol of a headless bull. In addition to that, the temple is flanked by River Surla that adds to the charm and natural beauty at the place.

Architecture of Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple

A majestic Shiva Linga presides the inner sanctum of the temple. And a local legend states that a huge cobra resides in the dark corners of the temple even today. There is a garba griha, antarala and a Nandi mandapa inside the premises that also have a headless statue of Nandi (vehicle of Lord Shiva). Built in the Jain style of architecture, the roof is supported by four pillars that stand on Ashokan lotus flowers and have intricate carvings of elephants.

There are also elaborate panels in the temple that are adorned with carvings of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma and their consorts. The mandap is covered with sloping roofs and the inner sanctum is supported by a three tiered tower. In one of these columns is also a scene from Kadamba empire replete with elephants and horses.

History of Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple

Made out of basalt, Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple was built during the Kadamba period and is inspired from the Jain style of architecture. It was constructed in the 12th century and is believed to be the oldest temple of Goa. Based at the foot of the Western Ghats, the temple has also been a witness to several invasions and attacks that were made on Goa.
