Michaelmas Cay, Great Barrier Reef Overview

Michaelmas Cay is a small sand cay located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, about 40 kilometers northeast of Cairns, Australia. Known for its vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life, it is a popular destination for snorkeling and diving. The cay also serves as a significant bird sanctuary, home to thousands of nesting seabirds.

Cruising the beautiful Michaelmas Cay is a favourite activity among visitors to the Reef. The cay is actually a protected bird sanctuary for migratory birds, of which you'll see many. As many as 20,000 birds reside on the cay in the summer months. You can snorkel and dive in the waters around the cay, acquainting yourself with the green sea turtles and hundreds of tropical fish. The cay is only open to the public for 5 and a half hours everyday between 09:30 and 15:00.
