Situated in the central west part of Santorini, about 3.5 Km away from the capital Fira, Imerovigli is popular with honeymooners because of its beautiful breathtaking views of caldera on one side and volcano on the other. With strategically built whitewashed houses around the caldera, Imerovigli is never as crowded as other towns on the caldera. Must Know Before You Travel to Imerovigli

  • Imerovigli is a pedestrian-only town, however to connect it with other parts of Santorini, a frequent bus facility, rental ATV and cars service is available.
  • Roads in Imerovigli are either pretty steep and are with steps, they are pretty rocky as well. 
  • Restaurants, Cafes and shops are open from 9:00 AM till 6:00 PM.
  • There are no bars or supposed nightlife, nearest pubs are either in Fira or few are in Oia.
  • Visit Oia in the early morning, before 9:00 AM, to avoid crowds. Also, there is a very limited area for people to spread, so there is a huge crowd during sunset time. However, it is still worth experiencing.
  • Avoid synthetic fabrics and prefer flowing, airy pants or jumpsuits over dresses; shorts over skirts due to the windy weather of the Greek islands. Prefer comfortable flats being mindful towards the rugged landscape and cobbled streets of the island.

Shopping in Imerovigli

Imerovigli provides a limited shopping experience as there are only a handful of shops in the village. Due to its closeness to the capital of Santorini, Fira, which is just about 3 km away, Imerovigli is not commercially developed and offers no activities either apart from accommodation or a limited choice of restaurants.

History of Imerovigli

During the Venetian rule, 5 fortified castles were built on Santorini, one of which was constructed in Imerovigli. Later made a guard post to give an early warning to the rulers of coming dangers, the castle gradually lost its significance and was abandoned in the 19th century. Remaining ruins were levelled by the earthquake in 1956 but Skaros Rock ( remains of the castle) is still the most popular attraction of Imerovigli.

Suggested Itinerary for Imerovigli

Day 1: Start by heading off to Oia in the early morning to witness the empty labyrinthine streets of the picturesque coastal village. Visit Oia castle, Skaros rocks and blue-domed churches to witness awesome sea views. Stick to one of these viewpoints to witness the iconic sunset, or alternatively, head down to Ammoudi Bay for sunset viewing.

Day 2: Head down to Fira to catch a ferry to Kamari and Perissa beach. Visit Akrotiri Archaeological site by afternoon. Return to Fira by evening and hit some of the handful of pubs before returning to Imerovigli.

With more time, one can explore the nearby islands of Mykonos, Naxos and Paros.
