Bergama, Izmir Overview

Bergama is a historical town located in the İzmir province. The town is built on the site of the ancient city of Pergamum or Pergamon, renowned for its significant archaeological ruins. Pergamon ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage site including Pergamon Acropolis, the Temple of Trajan, the Theatre of Pergamon, and the remains of the Altar of Zeus. Other things to explore are Archaeological Museum, Red Basilica, Asklepion and the town's historic mosques.

Once in Bergama, the town center and most of the main attractions are easily navigable on foot. For the Acropolis, take the cable car, which offers a scenic and convenient way to reach the hilltop ruins. The town has several historic mosques, including the Old Mosque (Ulu Cami) and the Şadırvan Mosque, within walking distance to the town center.

How to Reach

By Public Transport from Izmir: From Izmir, you can take the IZBAN train to Aliağa, the northern terminus of Bergama or bus 835 runs every 30 minutes to Bergama Otogarı, the inter-city bus station. The entire journey takes about 2 hours. Ensure you have an izmirimkart as the train and bus do not accept cash. Various inter-city bus operators, including Metroturizm, Pamukkale, and Flixbus, provide services to Bergama from major cities like Istanbul, Çanakkale, and Ankara.
By Car: If you prefer driving, follow the O-5 toll road from Istanbul to Soma, then take the D240 to Bergama. From Çanakkale, follow the coast road D550.
