Jembatan Kota Intan, Jakarta Overview

Built in 1628, Jembatan Kota Intan or The Diamond City Bridge is the oldest bridge in Indonesia. It is situated at Kali Besar as a hanging bridge similar to the bridges that are seen in the Netherlands. The forest wood material of the bridge has now been replaced with steel for strength. Tourists usually visit this bridge to get a complete experience of Jakarta Old Town.

Kota Intan bridge was built in the year 1628 when it was known as Hoenderpasarbrug which means ‘chicken market' since it was located close to the chicken market. The bridge today is an attractive tourist spot to take a walk or add as a photo stop on the way to exploring this beautiful town.

History

The name of the bridge has been changing with time. It was initially known as English bridge since it acted as a stronghold of the British troops. However, over the following years, the bridge was damaged due to the attacks by Banten and Mataram troops. Later, it was rebuilt by the Dutch and it came to be known as the Chicken Market Bridge. Lastly, the bridge was renamed as the Kota Diamond Bridge after the independence of Indonesia and owing to the name of the location near the Diamond of the Batavia Castle.
