Also Refered As:The Kirirom National Park is located in Kampong Speu in southwest Cambodia in the Cardamom mountain range. The park offers excellent cold weather as it is situated above 700 meters from the sea level. It is surrounded by cliffs, pine trees, wooded hills, Buddhist shrines and splendid views of Cardamom mountains. It is a popular day-trip destination for tourists visiting Phnom Penh, who enjoy the waterfalls, lakes and many species of birds that reside in the park.
The word Kirirom in Khmer translates to Happy Mountain. The Cambodian King Monivong gave the name to the country's first designated national park. Before this, the park was called as Phnom Vorvong Sorvong, a meeting place of two hills named on two prince brothers Vorvong and Sorvong. The park is located on the eastern end of the Cardamom mountains.
It used to serve as the meeting place of Cambodian elite before it suffered during the Khmer Rouge when it became an abode of refuge. In recent years, the landscape has transformed with the construction of many villas and resorts around the national park, and also active ecotourism projects to protect the reserve area of forests.
Kirirom Waterfalls- The most popular attraction of the park is this vast waterfalls. Depending on the season, you can swim and stand close to the waterfalls. The path leading to the foot is a small hike amidst forests. There are a few other smaller waterfalls close to this one, which can be explored as well.
Birdwatching Tours- You can sign up for bird watching guided tours at the centre once you arrive. It is seasonal and depends on availability.
Bamboo Huts- There are a lot of bamboo huts around the waterfall for tourists to relax and enjoy the views. They are popular picnic spots for the locals who camp here for a while.
Boat Trips and Hiking- There are boat trips available for tourists in Kirirom Park lake, where they get to witness incredible views of the mountains. People wanting to hike can follow one of the many trails around the lake, which leads to great viewpoints.
