Leke Meke is a volcanic crater red lake in the Karapınar district of Konya Province. The lake consists of two lakes within the crater of an extinct volcano - the inner lake, within the volcanic cone, and outer lake, outside the crater. You can enjoy activities such as birdwatching, particularly during migratory seasons when numerous bird species visit the lake. The area also offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the volcanic landscape.
Located approximately 9 kilometers southwest of Karapınar and just 2 kilometers south of the Konya-Adana highway (E981), Lake Meke is easily accessible by road. It spans about 800 meters in length and 500 meters in width, with a maximum depth of 12 meters. The inner lake, nestled within the volcanic cone, reaches depths of 25 meters and contains saline water, creating a distinctive ecosystem.
Lake Meke is facing challenges due to declining water levels, largely attributed to excessive agricultural water use and droughts in recent decades. Despite conservation efforts and its status as a protected Ramsar site since 2005, the lake periodically dries up, affecting its biodiversity and natural balance.
