The plane Tree of Hippocrates is an iconic tree located between the Gazzi Hassan Mosque and the entryway of Neratzia Castle. It is almost a 500-year-old tree, and it is believed that Hippocrates gave his lectures under its shade. It might even be the descendant of the original one that stood there about 2400 years ago.
In the same vicinity is an ancient fountain that a Turkish Governor built. The Platanos Square, which used to be the center of the town, has the remains of the headquarters, the town hall, a pharmacy, shops, cafes, and the Gazi Hasan Pasha mosque. One can learn much about the pre-medieval period and the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine monuments. Some of their excavated remains can be seen in the archaeological site of Agora, also known as the Harbour district.
