Kanonicza, Krakow Overview

Kanonicza is one of Krakow's oldest and most picturesque streets, located in the heart of the Old Town. It stretches from St. Mary's Magdalene Square to the foot of Wawel Hill, leading directly to the Royal Castle. The street is renowned for its well-preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture. As part of the Royal Route, Kanonicza Street offers a direct and scenic path to Wawel Castle.

Initially known as Grodzka Street, it was renamed Kanonicza in 1401 when the canons of the Krakow chapter began constructing their residences here. Many buildings date back to the 14th century, featuring Gothic foundations with Renaissance and Baroque facades added in later centuries. Notable structures include the Mansion of Bishop Erazm Ciołek at No. 17, considered one of the most impressive houses on the street. At No. 19-21, the former residence of Karol Wojtyła (Pope John Paul II) from 1951 to 1963 is now the Archdiocesan Museum, showcasing artifacts from his life and papal tenure
