Moorish Barracks, Macau Overview

The historical Moorish Barracks of Macau is located in São Lourenço, around the corner of A-ma Temple. Constructed by an Italian architect, this structure was used to accommodate a regiment from Goa, India, but now has been converted to the Headquarters of the Marine and Water Bureau of Macau. The uniqueness of the barracks is in its architecture.

With its pointed arches and lattice windows, the Moorish barracks showcase a blend of the Mughal and the Gothic. The exterior of the building is a pleasant sight painted in vibrant yellow intermingled with white floral patterns.

There is a long veranda where visitors can walk around whilst enjoying the scenery. Since it is a government institution, visitors are not allowed inside. It was included in the UNESCO’S World Heritage List in 2005.
