Parc National des Calanques

Parc National des Calanques, Marseille Overview

Parc National des Calanques is a protected area located along the Mediterranean coast between Marseille and Cassis in southern France. Established in 2012, it encompasses approximately 520 square kilometers, with 85 square kilometers of land and the remainder as marine area. The park is renowned for its striking limestone cliffs, narrow inlets, and diverse ecosystems and is known for activities like hiking, rock climbing, swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking.

Popular calanques like Sormiou, Morgiou, and En-Vau offer picturesque settings for these pursuits. The park is accessible via public transportation from Marseille; for instance, buses run to trailheads leading into the calanques. Additionally, boat tours departing from Marseille and Cassis provide a unique perspective of the coastline. Access to certain areas may be restricted during the summer months (June to September) due to fire hazards. It's advisable to check current conditions before planning a visit. Facilities within the park are limited; visitors should come prepared with sufficient water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear. Some calanques have small eateries, but options are sparse, so bringing snacks is recommended.
