Shanzu Beach, Mombasa Overview

Shanzu Beach, situated along the scenic coastline of Mombasa, Kenya, is celebrated for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters. This idyllic beach is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering a variety of activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and water sports like jet skiing and windsurfing.

Shanzu Beach is lined with several luxury resorts and beachfront hotels, providing visitors with a range of accommodation options and amenities. The vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life make it an excellent spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Additionally, the lively atmosphere is enhanced by numerous beachside restaurants and bars, where visitors can savor fresh seafood and enjoy breathtaking ocean views.

Unlike other Kenyan beaches, Shanzu Beach is relatively short and enclosed by rocks on either side, resulting in fewer tourists and a more tranquil environment. The only vendors are a few Beach Boys selling handmade souvenirs and colorful scarves. At low tide, the beach is ideal for long walks. However, appropriate footwear is recommended as the route along the rocks to Bamburi Beach can be slippery due to large stony areas, algae, and other water plants. Additionally, some coral is present in the area.

Activities at Shanzu Beach

Shanzu Beach is ideal for swimming and windsurfing. A fragile wooden hut in the middle of the beach serves as the base for a private windsurfing school. Here, visitors can rent equipment and take windsurfing courses. The school also offers trips on a glass-bottom boat, deep-sea fishing excursions, and rides on a Dhow, a traditional fishing boat seen at many other Kenyan beaches. Snorkeling equipment is available for hire, allowing visitors to explore the coral reef about 500 meters from the shore. At low tide, the water is so shallow that one can walk directly to the reef. The school staff also provides swimming lessons for children.

How to Reach Shanzu Beach

Shanzu Beach is located north of Mombasa and is easily accessible by bus, taxi, or the traditional Tuk Tuk. There is only one entrance to the beach from the road, as it is otherwise surrounded by hotels. Walking from the neighboring Bamburi Beach is also an option, though this is typically not feasible in the afternoons when the beach is flooded at high tide.
