Situated at a distance of 9 km from Munnar on the Thekkady Road, Lockhart Tea Museum is one of the newest editions to the tourist places in the city. Opened on the 22nd of January, 2014 for the public, the museum is a part of the Lockhart Estate which is a major tea plantation estate. The museum offers a historical insight into the first ever tea plantations of Munnar which date back to 1879.
Lockhart Museum houses several equipment, data and info explaining the nitty gritties of tea production and processing. Here you can see the mechanical harvesting machines, shears, fletcher sprayers and more. There are also a variety of freshly brewed teas which you can choose from and taste. In addition to that, there is delicious food and variety of ice-creams prepared by the staff. You can also pick up packaged tea from here to take back home with you.
Boasting of wooden exteriors and sprawling lush green tea plantations in the front, Lockhart Tea Factory is an added attraction next to the Lockhart Tea Museum. Tea is prepared in the factory using ancient conservative methods. It includes steps like withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and fibre extraction. The factory produces a grand total of around 20 million kilograms of tea annually that is exported to various countries like China etc. Flavour tea is the speciality of the factory.
