Shine Falls, Napier Overview

A spectacle amidst the lowlands of Napier, Shine falls is a majestic waterfall in Hawke’s Bay at 58 metres. It is considered the tallest waterfall in the region, and the hike leading to it attracts tourists as the views along the trail are vibrant and beautiful.

Located in the Boundary Stream Reserve, the walk takes about 45 minutes to an hour to reach the waterfall, making way through the forest, the stream and bridges. On getting to the falls, the calm and quiet surroundings give out soothing air, and the sight of the falls relaxes the stress of the hike. The Shine Falls Hike

Located on the North Island coast, the hike to the waterfall is a one day trip through the scenic landscapes of the Boundary Stream Reserve. Here the visitors can spot the National bird of the country, the Kiwi along with other birds like the kereru and tui. So, bird watching is another additional treat one can score here. The trail continues with lush green views and sandstone groves through the reserve and the forests kanuka, kawakawa, kowhai and titoki, and stretches on for about an hour till the waterfall. It is a well-marked trail and begins uphill which later subsides to lowlands along the path. 
Once at the waterfall, the calm and serene atmosphere here charms the hikers and relaxes the stretch of the hike.

Traveller Tips

1. If you want to watch the birds, it is preferred you bring a set of binoculars along.
2. The falls are located in a secluded area, and therefore, there are no stores nearby. You might want to pack a few snacks to have a quick bite while on the hike.
3. Since you have to hike to reach the falls, a fine pair of hiking shoes or boots is a great option.
4. There are no public toilets here. So carry tissues and toilet papers with you, in case an emergency arises. 
5. If you are travelling with a dog, this might be a problem as dogs are not allowed on the Reserve land.

How To Reach Shine Falls

Shine Falls is about one and a half hour away from the Napier city, so if you decide to drive there take the State Highway 2and follow it till you see the ‘Shine Falls’ sign. After reaching the sign you need to take a left into the Matahorua Road and after a stretch of about 11 km another left into the Heays Access Road until you reach the parking area of the falls.
