Located on Vomero Hill, this militarian fortress of Castel Sant'Elmo overlooks the city of Naples, backed by the extraordinary view of the hinterland and the islands from Sorrento Peninsula to Phlegraean Fields. It serves now as a museum and an exhibition hall.
This beating heart of the Napoleon region, Castel Sant'Elmo, derives its name from an ancient 10th-century church dedicated to Sant'Erasmo and dates back to the 1200s. In 1799, a group of intellectuals inspired by the French Revolution gathered at the castle to proclaim the Neapolitan Republic. Later in the 19th Century, the court served as a prison and now rests as a museum.
